TEACHING

My teaching focuses on computational research skills, research data, scholarly communication, and applied professional learning. I emphasize hands-on work with authentic research problems and tools, with the goal of moving learners from guided practice toward independent problem solving.

 

I have taught genomics, bioinformatics, command-line computing, reproducible research, and data-analysis skills using the Carpentries instructional model and related approaches. At Kansas State University Libraries, I developed a continuing Carpentries-based computational and genomics training program that builds on collaborations with USDA Agricultural Research Service and supports practical research-computing and data-literacy training for students and researchers. My prior teaching includes graduate computational genomics, Data Carpentries instruction, bioinformatics boot camps, and undergraduate biology instruction.

 

I also develop applied-learning opportunities within the Open Publishing Exchange. These experiences connect student employment and mentoring with structured learning in scholarly publishing, open educational resources, research data, software, and research infrastructure. My teaching philosophy emphasizes progressive independence, reproducibility, transferable technical skills, reflective practice, and the production of durable work that students can use as evidence of professional development.
