Marci R. McMahon

McMahon's faculty affairs research includes faculty equity and institutional transformation, especially the advancement of Latinas in STEM academic careers. She is the author of a co-edited book volume with Marie T. Mora and Ala R. Qubbaj, ADVANCING Latinas in STEM Academic Careers (Emerald Age Publishing, March 2026), and Advancing Women in Academic STEM Fields through Dual Career Policies and Practices (Information Age Publishing, 2018).

McMahon's literature and cultural studies research engages Latinx literature, theater, and performance with a particular focus on how sound functions as modes of cultural citizenship and belonging. She is the author of Domestic Negotiations: Gender, Nation, and Self-Fashioning in US Mexicana and Chicana Literature and Art (Latinidad: Transnational Cultures in the U.S. series, Rutgers University Press, 2013). Her second scholarly book, Sonic Cultural Citizenship in Times of Crisis (forthcoming in the Race and Mediated Culture Series, Ohio State University Press) listens to sound-making practices in Mexican American/Latinx theater from the work of El Teatro Campesino to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.  Her other work appears in field defining publications, including in Latinx Literature in Transition, 1992-2020 (ed. William Orchard, Cambridge University Pres, 2025);  Mexicana Fashions: Politics, Self-Adornment, and Identity Construction (Ed's Cantu and Hurtado, UT Press, 2020); and The Chicano Studies Reader: An Anthology of Aztlán, 3rd & 4th Editions. Her peer-reviewed scholarship appears in the following journals: Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies; Chicana/Latina Studies: The Journal of MALCS; Frontiers: A Journal of Women’s Studies; Journal of Equity & Excellence in Education; Text & Performance Quarterly; and Theatre History Studies. She is also the co-editor (with Caitlin Marshall and Patricia Herrera) of a two-part series, Sound Matters, in Performance Studies.
