Shing Chang

Dr. Shing I Chang is a Professor and Interim Department Head of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Kansas State University, with over three decades of experience advancing artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data-driven decision systems for real-time process monitoring and control. His work bridges rigorous engineering science and practical deployment, focusing on how AI can be embedded into operational systems to enable continuous monitoring, autonomous control, and scalable optimization across complex environments. Dr. Chang is internationally recognized for pioneering AI-enabled process monitoring frameworks that integrate machine learning, neural networks, fuzzy logic, and statistical process control. His research has driven innovations in real-time quality assurance and adaptive control for manufacturing systems, including additive manufacturing, laser-based processes, and cyber-manufacturing platforms. More recently, he has led projects applying generative AI and large multi-modal models to autonomous operations, including fraud identification of phone calls targeting older adults, controlled-environment agriculture and smart infrastructure systems, where real-time sensing, prediction, and corrective action are mission-critical.
