ABOUt

Dr. Shakhawat H. Tanim is an Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Regional & Community Planning at Kansas State University and a Faculty Scholar with the Kansas Water Institute. His work sits at the intersection of geospatial data science, disaster risk, infrastructure resilience, and public health. Using GIS, machine learning, deep learning, spatial modeling, and simulation, he develops decision-support approaches for addressing water-related hazards, emergency response, infrastructure systems, and access to health services.

Dr. Tanim holds a Ph.D. in Geography, with a concentration in GIS, from the University of South Florida. His dissertation examined hurricane evacuation behavior and modeling at the neighborhood level, and his work was recognized with the Jeanne X. Kasperson Award from the Hazards, Risks, and Disasters Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers. Before joining Kansas State University, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Clemson University, where he contributed to interdisciplinary research on risk, resilience, geospatial analytics, and public health.

His interdisciplinary research examines how people, infrastructure, and environmental systems interact under conditions of risk and uncertainty. His work has addressed hurricane evacuation, flood risk, water and hydropower systems, infrastructure resilience, infectious disease forecasting, urban environmental conditions, and the strategic placement of mobile health clinics. Through collaborative research with academic, governmental, and community partners, Dr. Tanim translates complex spatial and social data into decision-ready tools that support more resilient, equitable, and sustainable communities.
