Ryan Howell

Ryan Howell is an instructor in the Department of Uncrewed Aircraft Systems at Kansas State University Salina, where he teaches courses in UAS operations, safety, remote sensing, mission planning, LiDAR, thermography, and geospatial data processing. His teaching emphasizes applied technical skills and the integration of emerging technologies into real-world problem solving, preparing students to work across aviation, geospatial, and data-driven industries. In addition to undergraduate instruction, he contributes to professional outreach through specialized workforce training in drone operations and data analytics, including programs developed for emergency response and public safety professionals. His academic and research background combines unmanned systems, geographic information systems, and environmental science.

He earned both B.S. and M.S. degrees in Wildlife and Wildlands Conservation from Brigham Young University, where his graduate research focused on using high-resolution drone imagery and GPS data to analyze sage-grouse habitat and seasonal movement patterns. His scholarly work has examined applications of UAS and remote sensing in habitat modeling, vegetation measurement, animal behavior, and spatial information management, resulting in multiple peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.

Howell maintains active engagement with industry and professional practice through certifications including advanced Pix4D trainer credentials and thermography certification. His current interests include expanding applied UAS education, advancing geospatial data workflows, and supporting interdisciplinary projects that connect aviation technology with research and community needs.
