Jishu Shi

Dr. Jishu Shi is the Dr. Wayne & Hilda Appleton Endowed Professor of Vaccine Immunology and Director of the Center on Biologics Development and Evaluation (CBDE) at Kansas State University. With more than three decades of experience spanning Pfizer and leading U.S. academic institutions, Dr. Shi has dedicated his career to developing innovative vaccines and diagnostic assays for major swine diseases. 

As the founding director of CBDE, Dr. Shi leads a center dedicated to providing state-of-the-art veterinary biologics development services to industry partners and clients worldwide. Supported by the Office of Research Development within the Office of the Vice President for Research at Kansas State University, the center currently operates a 3,000-square-foot Biologics Development Module (BDM) and is constructing a 10,000-square-foot autogenous vaccine manufacturing facility scheduled to open in 2027. In addition to bioprocess development for commercial-scale vaccine production, CBDE will provide contract manufacturing services for licensed autogenous vaccines for swine and cattle. These capabilities address critical gaps when circulating field strains fall outside the protection provided by commercial vaccines, enabling veterinarians and producers to respond rapidly to emerging disease threats and better protect animal health.

In addition to his research and leadership roles, Dr. Shi teaches veterinary students in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program at Kansas State University and is committed to advancing global veterinary education and collaboration. Since founding the U.S.-China Center for Animal Health in 2010, he has fostered strategic partnerships among universities, animal health companies, industry associations, and government agencies to promote scientific collaboration, workforce development, and innovation in animal health.
