FUNDING

Goodson's work is grounded in the teaching and learning of composition, literature, and language in secondary schools. He explores how adolescents engage with texts, literacy practices, and media in classroom contexts, with attention to pedagogical strategies that support meaningful literacy development. His scholarship extends into teacher preparation, induction and retention of early-career teachers, and the evolving challenges faced by educators. This includes studies on teachers' experiences during crises (such as the COVID-19 pandemic), policy enactment and its impact on teacher agency, and the preparation of teachers for diverse and rural school settings. Goodson has a longstanding interest in media literacy, digital literacies, participatory culture, and the intersections of technology and culture in education. He has examined how media and popular culture influence teaching and learning, including topics such as civil disobedience and media literacy. As Executive Editor (and previously editor) of Educational Considerations and a former editor of the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, Goodson frequently contributes to reflective and historical analyses of the field. His writings often address paradigm shifts in education, social justice in schooling, and the role of teacher educators in responding to societal changes. Overall, his research integrates practical classroom applications with broader theoretical and policy considerations, emphasizing reflective practice, culturally responsive approaches, and the preparation of effective teachers for complex educational environments. He has collaborated on projects involving video-based education ethnography, place-based literacies, and analyses of educational publications over decades
